Telescope Workshop


On Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM the Island County Astronomical Society is presenting a workshop at the Burlington Public Library on what to look for when you buy a telescope. So, before you buy, come to this free presentation on what to buy BEFORE you go shopping. You may just need binoculars until you learn the night sky and try out different scopes.

The Alger Lookout Thespian Association - A.L.T.A presents the musical, "Spitfire Grill" based on a film by Lee David Zlotoff. They will hold auditions at the Alger Community Church, 1475 Silver Run Lane, Bellingham (Alger) on October 23 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM and October 24 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM. The Basics of Archives is for people who work or volunteer in organizations that deal with the past-whether it's a museum, historic house, the city clerk's office, the library's local history room, a historic site, or a college archives. You'll get practical advice, sample forms and policies, and learn basic practices you need to follow so that you can collect, protect, and help people use the historical treasures in your care.

In this workshop you'll learn:
* What historical records are-and aren't.
* How to decide what to keep.
* How to make sure you have legal title to your collections.
* How to handle collections when you get them so you know what you have and
how to locate collections.
* How to protect your collections from theft.
* How to deal with copyright issues.
* What tools you need to create to help users find the information in your collections.
* How to take care of historical records to ensure their preservation
and accessibility into the future.
* How to let the public know what you have and how to get people excited
about using your collections.
* And-where to go when you need help?

Homeschool Skating with Christian Music

Join us on Wednesday, November 3rd @ Skagit Skate (Behind Fred Meyer) for skating from 10:00 AM - 12 Noon on the first Wednesday of each month. About $6 per person. Non-skaters are free. (suggested entry fee - casual dance clothes). Bring your lunch and then stop by the Burlington Public Library for a free monthly program for homeschoolers from 1:00 - 2:00 PM.This month's theme is Forensics!

Geography Bee is Coming!


It’s time to mark your calendars for a fun-filled evening of geography and sharing. Homeschool students in grades 4-8 are encouraged to participate in the Geography Bee sponsored by National Geographic on Friday, November 19, 7:00 p.m. We will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon. Digging Up Fossils!

On Saturday, November 6th from 1:30 - 2:30 PM the Mt. Vernon City Library is offering a great hands-on program that will teach children about fossil collection. Families with children ages 4 and up are invited to come make fossil rubbings, learn about fossil collecting, and they even promise some surprises!! Fun for all ages and families are encouraged to enjoy together.
